In 2015, Heidi Alexander posted a great list of women in the field of legal technology on the Law Technology Today blog. Last year, she brought the concept to the ABA’s Legal Technology Resource Center to turn it into an annual recognition event.
There has been some evolution of the concept. For example, there is now a nomination and selection process, and there is a new class each year, which I think makes the combined list especially helpful to those looking for women speakers, authors and experts.
The 2017 class was announced at ABA TECHSHOW 2017. The list of this year’s class and earlier classes can be found here.

The episode, which features ABA President Linda Klein, Heidi Alexander and other other women involved ion the Women of Legal Tech recognition process, was one of my favorite episodes of TECHSHOW Today. It was so much fun, inspiring in many ways, and you’ll notice a great energy and vibe among the guests.
I’ve already learned that one of the women on this year’s list got a great speaking gig at a conference because the conference organizers used the list to help them find speakers. That should be a big hint to other conference organizers.
I’m still hearing, too often, about all male legal tech panels and people commenting that they can’t find women speakers for legal tech presentations. I always send them to the Women Legal Tech list.
However, even that doesn’t seem to be enough. We all need to work on this. I always recommend at least two women when asked for ideas about speakers and, for quite a few years, I’ve made a concerted effort not to be on all male panels. There’s still work to do.
But it can be done. Adriana Linares and the TECHSHOW Board had more than half of the presenters at ABA TECHSHOW 2017 be women. Think about that.
As many people already know, the LTRC Women of Legal Tech is one of my favorite projects to be associated with. I salute Heidi and everyone involved with this project and congratulate the class of 2017, the women previously recognized, and look forward to the class of 2018.
